The VirHoX project brings together European partners, including scientists from the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, to develop a universal technology that links viruses to their true host species. The approach is based on the idea that viruses depend on cellular ribosomes to produce proteins, allowing viral RNA physically associated with host ribosomes to reveal host–virus relationships. By building tools that connect viral and ribosomal RNAs and analysing translation across diverse systems, the consortium aims to uncover previously unknown virus–host interactions and support research on emerging pathogens.
